The current state of the Pharmaceutical, Biotech, and Fine Chemical industries makes it clear that any enterprise in these fields must enhance technical innovation and meet the needs of business in the real world by rapidly transforming ideas into practice. Only those enterprises that deliberately combine intellectual creativity across a broad range of scientific disciplines with the rigor of industrial process design and business development will enjoy a future. Dodds & Associates enables clients to achieve this goal. Contract services are provided which cover three aspects of chemical and biological process development, specifically:
A strategic plan is provided that fits the client's business plan, anticipates or creates the intellectual property strategy, addresses competitive technology and meets the client's immediate business needs while maintaining the essential intellectual creativity of the client's staff.
This service is most valuable to new and small enterprises that do not yet have a full time technical executive staff, but that still require a strategy to develop their technology. Of particular value to these clients, the plan will explicitly recognize and encourage existing or proposed academic input, while bringing an applied, industrial focus to the technical program.
As the client requires, the technical plan proceeds from a high-level summary, through specific proof-of-principle and critical-path tasks, down to bench-level experiments. The plan covers appropriate phasing and timelines for the work, with defined technical milestones, evaluation and decision points, and timings for presentations and patent filings. Requests-for-Proposal are written and contract services for process scale-up with third parties arranged.
With the client, specific details for the presentation of the technical plan at a Board level or to investors can be prepared. For established organizations, D&A can provide the strategic plan to create and build new technology groups, including the organizational structure that best supports the technical work that is anticipated. D&A takes on the role of external advocate to introduce and champion new paradigms in existing organizations, and has the experience to integrate them into the client's existing corporate structure.
The need to perform due diligence on the financial and business aspects of a proposed project or investment is well understood. Today, the need for independent analysis of the technology underlying a new endeavor is recognized as equally important, and demands increasing attention.
This service provides the client with an independent evaluation of the technology anticipated for use in a project, or being considered for acquisition, licensing, or funding. For example, this service informs the client if the technology is adequately described in issued patents or applications, or if existing patents and applications cover the use of the technology beyond the immediate needs of the project.
Evaluation of competitive technology for positioning the client's business model or for business negotiations can be provided. With experience in writing patents, providing scientific expertise for patent defense, and evaluating various process technologies for licensing, D&A provides the client with a unique combination of skills exactly suited to the enhancement and defense of intellectual property covering process technology in a number of scientific disciplines.
D&A has experience deconvoluting the intellectual property positions among multiple parties working on closely related projects but under different agreements. By bringing clarity to complex collections of technologies, this service allows the client to avoid the problem of overlapping intellectual property and stacking royalties, to keep projects properly directed, and to maintain flexibility when licensing technology for future technical projects. D&A can also provide the client with detailed directions for performing technical work to support specific intellectual property requirements.
D&A provides management with industrial experience that directs the client's resources to achieve project goals on schedule and within budget, while enhancing the project team's creativity. From D&A, the client receives a single point of contact, responsibility and reporting. This is particularly valuable for small or virtual companies which need to manage projects requiring diverse technical efforts, possibly at separate geographical locations, or which involve academic or not-for-profit institutions. Diligence on the intellectual property in the project area can be provided, as well as bench-level guidance to scientists whose work will be the basis of patent applications. This is especially useful for multi-disciplinary projects which may not fit existing organizational structures. Examples of projects successfully executed by D&A are
D&A provides external management with experience bridging organizational barriers and cultural divides between disparate scientific disciplines. This gives the client a unique set of management strengths, including;
Independent of the other services, Dr. David Dodds provides service as an expert witness in process technology over the disciplines of organic chemistry, molecular biology, microbial fermentation, protein expression, natural product recovery and purification, and biocatalysis. Dr. Dodds has experience creating and defending intellectual property as a scientist, and is familiar with the interaction of law and science. His patent and publication record, tenure on scientific advisory boards, and experience speaking at conferences, give the client a recognized expert, while his interdisciplinary background across a uniquely broad range of technologies allows the client to pursue complex, interdisciplinary arguments. Dr. Dodds has written opinions, been deposed, and has court experience. Litigation history and attorney references are available.
